Still Life Images According to the 3C Rule: “Sausage Knife”

Updated: Mar 30, 2022

“Jean where’s the sausage knife?”...The voice of my next-door neighbour addressing her husband still echoes in my head.A knife designed specifically for cutting sausages, what an original idea...It deserves some still life images...

Like in the case of studio photos and visual creations, it is often necessary to refer to the 3C rule, namely:

Concept - Casting - Creation

Concept: was suggested by the neighbour. The more minimalist the concept, the more conceptual it is.

Casting: A knife and a sausage. For the sausage, I chose a Lyon sausage, a traditional Lyonnaise recipe that consists of lean pork and some lardons. As for the knife, I used a Tanto with Damascus steel blade. The appearance of the Damascus steel is in perfect harmony with the lardons embedded in the lean meat of the sausage.

Creation: in the studio, with a mixture of daylight and tungsten light. The aim is to reinforce the concept of Damascus steel knife based on a symbiosis of the two elements.

So I created the main image emphasizing the "inner beauty" of the Lyon sausage and the superb Damascus pattern of the blade that is cutting it. I also took two simple pre-action images featuring the two items of the concept taken from the casting. Note that in still life photography we focus more on styling/decoration.

For all the creative people looking for a concept, sometimes you just need to open your window, listen to your neighbour's voice and remember the 3C rule!
